Visitor’s Center
The Visitor’s Center is a replica of what Edward Musgrove’s house would have looked like in the late 1700’s. In the mid 1770s, Edward Musgrove acquired land in this region and built his house on the Enoree River with some additional outbuildings. When Edward decided to move to this area, he had no clue what him and his family were about to get into. All that is left of the original house is some ruins as a reminder of what happend during that time period.

National Register of Historic Places
The Musgrove Mill Site got registered in 1975 in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The park has a memorial to the legendary Mary Musgrove, two marked trails, a picnic area, a fishing pond, a canoe launch, and a small waterfall. The Visitor’s Center has many displays and an audio/light show display that explains the events that took place and how the war moved around the area of Musgrove Mill.

The Battle of Musgrove Mill
The Beginning
In 1780 (A couple years after Edward Musgrove moved to his newly built home on the Enoree River), the British was successful in taking over Charles Town in South Carolina (Now known as Charleston South Carolina). After the town was overrun, the British only needed to continue north to take over all thirteen colonies. The only thing left in their way between success and failure of the South Carolina take over strategy was the frontier region known as the “South Carolina Backcountry”. 200 Patriots got together to oppose the advancement of the British soldiers across South Carolina. Little did they know, their plans will have to be modified due to the sheer numbers of the British.
The Obstacle
When the Patriots attempted their first strike at the advancing British soldiers, they thought the fight was going to be against a equal size army. They did not know that the original army of 200 Loyalists were joined by reinforcements of 300 men (Totaling the number of advancing army to 500). The patriots were outnumbered and they lost the element of surprise due to a run in with a Loyalist patrol team. Unable to retreat, the Patriots had to regroup and come up with an alternative plan to win this battle.
The Outcome
The strategy the Patriots decided to use was in this battle was the hit-and-run tactic. They formed up at a ridge top that overlooks the road to Musgrove Mill and sent small teams to advance towards the enemy. The Loyalists would return fire to the small teams and follow them back in the woods because they thought they were retreating. When the Loyalists get to a certain distance, the Patriots open fired. Realizing that they just walked into an ambush, the advancing army was forced to retreat in North Carolina. Through a battle that did not last even a full hour, thh British suffered a loss of 60 soldiers killed, 90 wounded, and 70 taken prisoner. Only four Americans were killed and nine were wounded on the Patriot’s side.
