This self-guided course is marked by 30 station that help illustrate the history of this mountain-nestled city in western North Carolina.The Asheville Urban Trail is broken into five time periods, each station tells the story of Asheville’s past using statuary, bronze plaques and local art and is an excellent way to explore some of the most vibrant, visit-worthy and historic sections of downtown Asheville.

Biltmore in Asheville

Biltmore Estates is one of the most extravagant sites in the world and is located South-West of Asheville NC (Click Here). This Estate was originally built in 1895 and is considered America’s largest private home. It was built with the help of George Vanderbilt and presents a French Renaissance-style type of architecture. It has features such as 250 rooms and an 8,000-acre garden with 2.5 miles of footpaths. Admission to the estate allows you to tour the grounds and several rooms.

The Biltmore Estate’s architecture is filled with antiques and rare artwork. Tourists and locals should always allow enough time to visit the gardens, as well as the Estate’s River Bend Farm and winery. For an additional charge, you can join a guided tour that includes parts of the enormous estate that are not usually open to the public.

The North Carolina Arboretum

Pisgah National Forest

The Pisgah National Forest is home of the first tract of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911 which led to the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States. It is comprised of over 500,000 acres and is a complete hardwood forest that is full of land with mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, heavily forested slopes, whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. In addition, it is the home of the first school of forestry in the United States and boasts two of the first designated wilderness areas in the east. The forest is now preserved at the Cradle of Forestry in America historic site,The Pisgah, Grandfather and Appalachian Ranger Districts are scattered along the eastern edge of the mountains of western North Carolina and offer visitors a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoying the natural beauty of the mountains.
