VOTS (Veteran of the South) Junk Removal
At VOTS Junk Removal, we know a thing or two about being a veteran and the issues that come with serving our country. The question is, how many other people know anything about it except what they see on the news or hear from a friend? We won’t be going into our opinion on the matter, so we will just dive right in on the basics of Who is a Veteran?
Who is a veteran?
What actually defines a veteran?
A U.S. veteran is an individual who has served in any of the four branches of the United States military. The four U.S. branches consist of the Army, Marine, Navy, and Air Force. The military consists of different genders, ages, races, and different backgrounds. Individuals that have joined the U.S. military have come from many other parts of the country and even outside of the country. Some individuals outside of the country join the U.S. military as a way for them to get American citizenship.

Are there any other requirements needed?
To be able to have veteran status, there are requirements that need to be met other than just joining a branch of service.
- A person has to have served a minimum of 24 months of active duty
- The service member has to be discharged from the military with anything but a dishonorable discharge
- If a person in the military is medically discharged while on active duty, the 24-month minimum does not apply and is waived
Are National Guard and Army Reserves Veterans?
Service members that have served in the National Guard and/or the Army Reserves can have veteran status if they meet certain requirements.
- Just like active duty members, National Guard and Army Reserves have the status of deployment to become eligible for veteran status
- When they are deployed, it has to be for a minimum of 180 days
- National Guard and Army Reserves service members can also achieve the status of being a veteran without even having to deploy as long as they have served for at least 20 years
- In addition, they also have to be discharged from their service with anything other than a dishonorable discharge
Veteran Benefits
People join the military for many different reasons. Some people join a branch of service as a way to honor their country while others use it as a way to get out of a small town. Even if the main reason to join the service was for personal benefit, obtaining a veteran status can offer more benefits after their service is completed.
Montgomery GI Bill

The Montgomery GI Bill is a program that helps a service member pay for a college education. The program supports graduate degrees, certifications, on-the-job training, and undergraduate degrees. The amount of money that a veteran can get from this program depends on the length of service, the type of degree they are going for, and if the service member paid for the GI Bill Booster.
Tax-Free Money

If the veteran served during a time when there was a war, they could qualify for a tax-free pension. In addition, there is a retirement program that a veteran can get paid for after serving a certain amount of years. How much will the veteran get taxed with these programs? In certain states, retirement pay will not get taxed at all. This means that they will have more money in their pocket. One example of one of those states is the state of South Carolina.
VA Home Loan

By obtaining veteran status, a person has the chance to be able to use a program called the VA Home Loan to get their very own house. There are many perks to this program when trying to get a house.
- This benefit does not expire (lifetime benefit)
- Does not require a down payment
- It is one of the lowest interest rates in the country with the opportunity of not having to pay for extra insurance such as the PMI (Private Morgage Insurance)
Health Care

Veteran status gives you the opportunity to receive VA Healthcare even when you are not on active duty. They can receive appointments with a regular care provider for regular check-ups, any kind of mental issues they are dealing with, and home care.
Disability

The VA Disability Benefits program helps veterans that were injured or have gotten sick while serving in the military. In addition to the VA Health Care benefit, the disability program helps get veterans the kind of support they need such as physical therapy, mental therapy, and even prosthetics.
With all these benefits, why isn’t everyone trying to join?

VOTS Junk Removal’s Veteran Mission
Even though many VA horror stories are out there on the internet, there are still ways to be able to help others in need. VOTS Junk Removal’s Veteran Mission is to make a corporation that is fully employed and operated by veterans from all branches. We are trying to create jobs in different fields to open up more opportunities for veterans that have just got out of the service, having a hard time dealing with the civilian transition, and have the option to work around people that they can understand and relate to daily.
In the future, we are hoping to expand into the commercial part of construction with dump trucks and real estate. Most of the profit from the company goes straight back into the company to be able to get different equipment. Examples of jobs that we are trying to open up within the corporation are:
- CDL Drivers

- Class A/B Truck Drivers

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do you have to serve in the military to be considered a veteran?
We use, “180 days of active duty not counting training or 1 day in a combat zone,” as our rule of thumb to determine if a person is a veteran or not.
Does a veteran have to be alive to be a veteran?
Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.
Are all military considered veterans?
Under US law, a veteran is defined as a “person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable.” With this definition, those who are actively serving in the military do not fall under the category of a veteran.
Who qualifies to be a veteran?
§ 101(2) provides: The term “veteran” means a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable. (E) authorized travel to or from such duty or service. 38 U.S.C.
Who is not considered a veteran?
Thus former or current members of the National Guard or Reserves are not considered to be veterans unless they had prior or subsequent service with an active component of the Armed Forces. (Reservists called to active duty by Executive Order qualify as veterans.)
Are you a veteran if you only did basic training?
According to the Veteran Affairs Guidelines for establishing veteran status: If you were discharged while still undergoing basic training (or any required training, for that matter), you are considered as a veteran if your discharge was due to a disability sustained because of your training.
